What is the Super Smooth ICE SHR Pro and how does it work?

The Super Smooth ICE SHR Pro is a two handpiece machine from Marshalls Cosmetic Machines, a UK supplier of salon and clinic equipment. One handpiece delivers SHR, which stands for Super Hair Removal. SHR uses repeated, lower energy pulses of light that gradually warm the hair follicle as the handpiece glides over the skin, rather than a single strong flash. The second handpiece is an IPL, or intense pulsed light, head with interchangeable filters. Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and turned into heat, which affects the follicle's ability to regrow hair. To keep the skin comfortable, the machine uses air and closed circuit water cooling, and the supplier states the treatment head can be cooled to as low as minus 4°C.

SHR suits larger areas well because the handpiece moves continuously across the skin instead of treating one spot at a time. Hair grows in cycles and only hair in its active growth phase responds to light, so a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart is normally needed. What should I expect, and is it suitable for me?

Your first visit starts with a consultation covering your medical history, medication and skin type, followed by a patch test at least 48 hours before your first full session. You will need to shave the area beforehand and avoid sunbeds, fake tan and strong sun exposure around your appointments. During treatment most people feel warmth, and the cooled head helps. Mild redness afterwards is common and usually settles within hours. Light based hair removal works best on darker hair, and results vary from person to person, so we cannot promise that every hair will be removed for good. It is not suitable during pregnancy, over tattoos or on very light, grey or red hair, and some medications and conditions rule it out.
